An osteopathic approach to Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is a painful and debilitating disease. Osteopaths are well placed to help with early diagnosis and appropriate management keeping patients from harm.
Ankylosing spondylitis and Axial spondyloarthropathy is much more common than most of us think, it effects an estimated 1 in 200 (approximately 220,000) people yet there is still an average of an 8.5 year delay in diagnosis, it is twice as common as MS (1 in 600 of whole UK population or 107,000), many clinicians are unaware of the diagnostic criteria.
The burden of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions on the NHS and economy is well documented with 6-9% of people presenting to general practice doing so with back pain; 7-15% of these will show features of axial SpA (AS).
If poorly managed or undiagnosed AS can lead to permanent disability, yet the treatment and detection of AxSpa has greatly improved in the last 10 years. The Institute of Osteopathy (iO) and National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS) are working hard to ensure that clinicians’ knowledge regarding AS improves and osteopaths are well placed to help dramatically enhance patient’s quality of life.
This CPD session will focus on
- how to identify patients and appropriately refer using the template tools available, helping patients get appropriate testing and treatment
- identify and discuss osteopathic management options and practical tips and technique selection
- resources for further study
- local support groups and online help
- medical management
- case-based discussion and biscuits (for the new CPD scheme).
We will meet the following criteria of the Osteopathic Practice Standards (OPS):
Standard A. 1-5
Standard B. 1-4
Standard C. 1 & 4 & 6
Standard D. 6 & 9-10
This session will be delivered by Andrew MacMillan MOst PGCME. Andrew lectures at the LSO and is speaking at the upcoming NASS conference on behalf of the iO. Andrew has personal experience of AS from a patient and clinicians’ perspective.
Cost: free, to include complimentary tea or coffee and biscuits
