– This hands-on, clinical 2-days (16 hr) workshop, will give therapists unique skills that will enable the treatment of patients they may previously have found difficult to manage because of high pain levels. Less complex cases will be handled more effectively.
– A multimodal, evidence-based, treatment approach is taught, with strong emphasis on early rehabilitation and a modified active manual therapy component.
– Using exercise as the primary approach for managing pain and preventing recurrence, participants will gain the confidence for early exercise prescription and rehabilitation, with little chance of aggravating the condition.
– Fifty percent of workshop time is clinical (presenter and participants treating patients).
– Dynamic manual therapy consists of: isometric exercise, dynamic oscillatory mobilisation, end of range over pressure, breathing, and awareness through movement.
– The combination of these techniques, which has been clinically proven, has not been described previously.
In 8 hours, participants will be equipped with techniques that will help to reduce patient pain, increase range of movement, improve muscle strength and improve proprioception.
– Evidence-based outcomes are emphasised with assessment forms provided for easy evaluation of the techniques taught. Assessment techniques are simple and designed for an out- patient setting. Ample time is given to master the techniques so that clinical application is enhanced. Pre-course online reading is provided, helping to save practical course time.
At the end of this workshop participants should be able to:
- Relate clinical anatomy and pathology to the importance of movement in injury recovery.
- Apply simple assessment techniques including ROM, muscle strength, muscle length, neurodynamics and proprioception relevant to lumbar spine patients in an out-patient setting.
- Provide effective treatment to back patients utilising: isometric exercise, dynamic oscillatory mobilisation and end of range passive stretch. All components are performed in one treatment session.
- Apply exercise therapy for acute and chronic pain disorders.
- Educate patients about their pain based on patient history, response to activity and clinical presentation.
About the speaker
Arie Michaeli MSc PT, MCMT Arie graduated as a physical therapist from the world-renowned Wingate Institute in Israel where he also completed a one-year post-graduate diploma in Manual Therapy. He emigrated to South Africa in 1985, where in 1992 he obtained a master’s degree in Physical Therapy majoring in Orthopaedics, from the University of the Witwatersrand. He later completed the Mastery Certification in Manual Therapy (MCMT) with Hands-On Seminars, USA. Arie is a manual and exercise therapist with a special interest in the rehabilitation of neuromusculoskeletal disorders focusing on the multimodal clinical concept. With over 30 years of clinical experience and research, Arie has developed the Exercise and Function without Pain (EFWP) concept, a dynamic manual therapy approach that utilises a combination of isometric exercise, active physiological oscillatory mobilisation, and end-of-range passive stretching. The Exercise and Function without Pain workshop has been presented over 30 times in Southern Africa.
